Chelsea defeated Manchester City 1–0 in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
After a drab first half, the Blues took the lead early in the second period when Timo Werner teed up Hakim Ziyech to fire into the empty net with City goalkeeper Zak Steffen out of position.
The Moroccan midfielder had an excellent chance to double Chelsea’s lead, but he was brilliantly denied by Steffen — and City ultimately created very little.
Manchester City are no strangers to Wembley and have already guaranteed their place in the EFL Cup final this season, but they’ll be hoping to reach the FA Cup final today, dreaming of the prospect of winning an unprecedented quadruple.
City came unstuck at this stage of the competition last year, slumping to a 2–0 defeat at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
If you somehow hadn’t realised, though, City have responded to their underwhelming 2019/20 campaign emphatically this season, comfortably sitting at the top of the Premier League with an 11 point cushion.
The Blues have lost just four games this term which is the fewest of any side from Europe’s top five leagues, and they’ll be confident heading into this game against Chelsea after emerging triumphant over Borrusia Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek.
When these two sides last met in January, City won 3–1 at Stamford Bridge, albeit Chelsea were coached by Frank Lampard on that occasion — Thomas Tuchel will now be in the opposing dugout.
Chelsea have enjoyed a renaissance since the German’s appointment, although Tuchel’s record against Pep Guardiola bodes well for City fans as he’s actually failed to beat the Catalan across their five previous encounters.
